How much does an average family make in vietnam?

I'm visiting Vietnam in about 6 wks. I want to give money to those that are in needy. I've already been warned to be careful about it cuz once I hand one thing out, they'll all swarm in. I was thinking about giving away about $1 per person. Is that a lot? Should I give less than that like in quarters as oppose to dollars?

And how much does an average family take home a month in US dollars?

I'm trying to get a better gauge on how much is too much or too little per person.

Thanks

  1. There are many poor people in Vietnam and the government does not do a lot to help them. And yes, the line between rich and poor is really thick! Some of the poor try really heard to find even a quarter a day!

You should not surprise that homeless people will ask you for money, especially kids. Sometimes they are really poor, but sometime kids are forced to do so. There are some bad "organizations" that kidnap kids to do that for them and also some terrible parents "sell" their own child for bad people to do so..

Yes, it may sound bad but all because people are so poor.

If you want to help them, try to do it carefully and "privately" or many other kids will follow you.

Go to some volunteering organizations to help. There are many!

  2. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that what you're intending to do is not a very good idea. If you're thinking that $1/person is a lot to give, then you have no clue in how to truly help those who are in need be it in Vietnam or elsewhere. In fact, passing out $1 bills like candy is more insulting than helpful to those in need.

You need to give the Vietnamese your eyes and ears more than what's in your wallet. Look at how they truly live and listen to what they truly need. That is the only way you're going to truly help the Vietnamese or anyone in need.

  3. I would be careful walking down the street with a handful of money passing it out. Not saying that the Vietnamese are dangerous, but I think it might seem weird to them that you are doing so. If you really want to help the Vietnamese people you can volunteer through a group called Volunteers for Peace. I know they have a program in Hanoi because I did it last year. Now an average person in Vietnam will make roughly $2 a day, or about 32,000 VND. One time, and only one time I gave money away to a lady with her hat out. The Vietnamese volunteer I was with thought it was strange to give money away and said that the government has programs for people that can't support themselves. Trade your dollars for dong when you get to the airport, and don't make the same mistakes as many Americans do by spending or giving away too much.

  4. average city/town folk about $150[ 2 people working at $3 per day]  farmers make a lot less.... whatever you give whoever you give to will be greatfull...however... once you give dont be surprised when they ask for more no matter how much you gave.. they'll always be another ptoject / expence they will need money for... God bless you for careing.....
