With Merchant Mariner Document (MMD-Z-Card) and TWIC card in hand, average daily pay for an entry-level Ordinary Seaman can range from $100-$170 a day depending on operating area.  Very few entry level positions are available anymore without some form of mariner or security documentation except for selected fishing, leisure, and privately-owned vessels.  


  2. As an Ordinary Seaman, you can reasonably expect to make around $50k/year, if you're sailing for a union shop. Look to the towed fleet, they still have a lot of work for Ordinaries. Most of the deep-sea jobs require at least an AB Special, which requires 360 days of sea time.
