Question:

How much does an eye exam cost?

Normally our insurance pays for eye exams but my son who is 13 has an appointment at the end of August for his yearly exam. Insurance won't pay for him to get one sooner. The problem is he is planning to get contacts at that next visit and right now he still wears child size frames and they are so small that they are cutting up his nose where they sit and they barely go around his ears anymore. We don't want to go buy a new frame and new lenses when he might get a new prescription in 2 months but we also don't want him to suffer with these small frames for the next two months either.

I would like to just take him earlier and pay for the exam myself but I don't know how much it will cost. I know the visit for a contact fitting is $65. and is not covered by insurance because my other son got contacts recently.

Does anyone know what a basic eye exam would cost? I live in Connecticut.

  1. Well here in Canada for anyone under 18 health insurance covers it. But I know from my mom and sister and father an eye exam is 50$.

  2. Eye exams are available everywhere, from discount outlets to surgical offices, so the fees can vary widely. Additionally, fees can vary depending upon the type of eyecare professional that you are seeing and the type of services that you are requesting.

i think the price will be around:

    Basic eye exam: $55

New Fatient Contact Lens fit: $95 to $145 plus the cost of the basic eye exam. (the cost very on the type of fit RGP, Toric, or Mono Vision/bifocal)

Returning Patient Contact Lens Fit: $45 plus the basic eye exam and $25 for each additional follow up.

    Dilation: $20

    Optos retinal imaging: $29

Office Visit: $55 and $25 for each additional follow up visit.

  3. Why don't you just call your doctor and ask?
