How much does an uncontested adoption cost?

My husband and his ex wife are considering allowing their child to be adopted by her new husband. (LONG story.) To shut her up we are considering funding the process. It will take place in the State of New York and I am wondering if anyone else has been through this sort of process and if there are any rough estimates of what it will cost. Also, is it better for us just to do the part where he essentially gives his permission for the child to be adopted or to do the whole darn thing start to finish?

  1. Contact an adoption attorney.  Based on what you have said, it will probably cost between $5,000 and $7,000.  The attorney fees are pretty significant, since there is a lot that they do "behind the scenes".  Also, a good adoption attorney charges each adoption a set amount that is used for advertising.  This is used to put ads in newspapers, magazines, even billboards asking pregnant mothers considering abortion or just wondering what to do to contact them to discuss adoption.  The birth mothers don't pay the attorneys, the adoptive parents do.  Therefore, the attorneys need some money to promote new business in order to attract more adoptive parents.

  2. $850.50

  3. this is called step parent adoption. Why in the world would You and husband pay to have the child adopted? All he has to do is sign the papers and maybe appear in court for a termination of parental rights hearing. If her new husband wants to adopt, let them pay for it.
