I know Canadians get free health care and you might not know how much this will cost. Does anyone have an idea? I will be in Canada for a month and I will urgently need to undergo an ultrasound for a cyst in my ovary. Thanks

  1. A ultra sound procedure, in your case, will be a cash purchase, in Canada. Pay with  cash or a credit card .

A  Toronto  ultra sound clinic will be able to give you a price, for services .

Do a Google search for " Toronto area ultra sound clinics ". call on the phone and ask for a cash price.

Why can't this be done in your "home country " ?

    Jim B. Toronto.

  2. First of all - Canadians DO NOT get free health care. We pay for the delivery of necessary medical procedures through the high taxes we pay.

Our health care system is known as "universal" and that refers to access only. It is NOT free of cost even though we don't pay out of pocket to see a physician. We do not provide universal access to visiting foreigners. That means that you will not be entitled to access to our universal health care. You will have to purchase extra health care coverage. No exceptions.

  3. You do not need to purchase extra insurance, but you will be required to pay cash/credit card before obtaining an ultrasound here. Prices vary clinic to clinic when you are a foreigner. Also, as you are not a citizen, you are not priority when scheduling appointments. You will not be denied, but your appointment might not be made in the month you will be here, unless emergency. I am also wondering why you do not get an ultrasound in the States, where I presume you are from, especially if you already know you are in need of one??  Or is that your purpose for coming to Canada..? I have looked it up, and generally what a procedure would cost you in the States, will cost roughly half here. But as we are getting into the Medical Tourism business, as many Americans like to come here for treatments, laws have changed and each clinic is allowed to charge out of country visitors what ever they would like.

  4. Wow, you should get this cyst looked after right away - it seems to have made you really cranky.

You should be able to pay cash for any service you want, IF you are able to get an appointment. I had a cyst on my ovary and it took me 3 weeks to get in to see anyone - but mine was not ruptured.

If you are already here and are in urgent need, go to the emergency room. If you have not yet arrived, be sure and make the appointment before you get here, because you may have to wait.

Good luck.... and maybe think twice before you bash a country whose healthcare you wish to partake of and whose citizens you want advice from. I hope things work out for you.
