  1. After arrival there, I would think that you could get along pretty cheap, considering you have no health issues or run into any other problems. Allow for food, which is much cheaper than the U.S.A., and for some transportation, which is also much cheaper. Then there are expenses such as supplies like toothpaste (or are you really going out?), communication, and room and board. All usually much cheaper than the U.S. Keep 'rob' money on you in case you get held up.

You maybe need about $15,000 if you're careful, give or take a lot. I've never 'backpacked', but do plan to move to Central America in a few weeks, and hope to go a long way on a little budget.

  2. It would depend on the kind of lifestyle you plan on having during your travels. I would recommend not thinking of how much money you will need to backpack for a year, but rather deciding how much you have available to travel and once you´re there figuring out hot to get the most bang for your back.

I´ve encountered many backpackers in Honduras, mostly the Bay Islands (Utila and Roatan), who have been traveling through Central America and somehow ended up in Utila, which is really inexpesive, and just stayed there, got a job at a bar or something and stayed for years.

My point being, don´t plan ahead too much as you never know what´s going to happen, and the best experiences are the ones you don´t plan for.

    Happy travels.
