  1. I went to Iowa State University, at the time, it was pretty cheap.  But, it is all determined by the number of classes you take per semester and the attached fees, housing etc.

For me, for books, classes and housing, for one year was about 20,000.  Books averaged 500 a semester, I never had to buy software because that was provided by the school labs.  Housing was about 6000 a semester (including food), and tuition averaged about 4000.  The computer fees and other stuff is really killer.

But, it all depends on the location of the college, but I would assume that most Public state colleges are like that.

  2. it would cost the same for any major. in my university it takes 120 credits to get bachelor degree for any field. And credit cost is same regardless of what the course is.

However, the textbook costs may vary among different fields. Also additional software like matlab, maple, etc etc would increase the cost.

Ofcourse,  you maybe in situation where you need tutoring or professional help from outside for your courses. That is what the main killer is.   Many students cannot grasp everything on their own, just by using textbook and going to class.  The outside professionals who have phd in computer science, etc etc would charge at least $50 an hour to teach or provide homework help. I have bachelor degree in math, but i took a lot of help from a man who has B.S. in math with honors, B.S. in physics with honors, M.S. in electrical engineering and phd in computer science.  I had to pay him over $12,000 altogether to make my degree possible because the courses were just too tough.

different university have different costs. As long as the degree is accredited it doesn't matter how the university is ranked, especially for a field like computer engineering which has too many jobs.

For my university cost of 3 credits is about $1000. So about $40,000 would be spent as cost of courses only.  Textbooks cost around $100. About $4000 for textbooks. Matlab and Maple each cost $100 too, so thats $200 for software.

you may be in need of additional textbooks, because you don't understand books that course uses. if you buy extra books from amazon for each course, then thats additonal $2000.

So if you do not take any professional help or tutoring from outside and can grasp everything by just going to class and using course textbook, then your total cost of bachelor degree should be around $48,000.

Most students don't have that kind of money and they take student loans.
