  1. the British isle is all free until college and sixth form  but in university you have to pay but you can get a student loan which is interest free and you have to pay like 5 pounds a week or something like that

  2. I'm at Columbia University, an expensive private school in New York City, where the total fees (tuition, room & board, books, etc.) total almost $50,000.  Because it's so expensive, the school offers financial aid based on how much you can afford to pay, and I pay about a third of that.

University tuitions really vary widely in the US, from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, because of financial aid, the endowment of the school, and whether it's public or private.  Many schools offer financial aid, which is either need-based or merit-based.  Need based is what my school offers, which means that they figure out how much you can afford to pay and try to fund the rest (the biggest and most expensive private universities are the ones which will fund you most fully) but other schools offer merit-based aid, which means if you have excellent grades and test scores, play a sport or instrument, or have other qualities that will add to the character of the school, they'll give you extra scholarships.

My suggestion is to think about what specialties you'd like to study and what schools offer great departments in those areas, and then to consider the region of the US you'd like to study in.  Check out www.collegeboard.com to research schools; this site will give you all the information about departments and location of universities (you can search for schools based on many factors), and will give you an idea about what types of financial aid are offered and whether you would qualify as an international student.  Then go to the school's website for more information once you have an idea of what schools appeal to you.  Good luck!
