How much does dimming lights reduce the amount of energy consumed?

i.e, if i dim the lights half way, does that mean that i use half the power as if i didnt dim them at all?

  1. no, using a "dimmer" switch doesn't reduce the amount of power used. your best bet is turn it off if you aren't using it.  and do less after dark.  use as much natural light as possible.


  2. almost typically the power will be slightly more than half but it will be close to half, if you really want to save energy then use floresant bulbs, and get energy star appliances

  3. dosnt do a thing

    dimmers use transformers. the transformer always has the same imput amount of power but regulates the output. dimming the light down to alomst nothing will use the same amount of power as to having it on full
