It's hard to tell. Are you talking about restaurants or grocery store? We have different kinds of prices et differents stores (pastas in a Monoprix will be about 8 times more expensive than in a Leader Price).

But generally I would say that it's a bit more expensive than in the US and cheaper than in England.

The question is as hard to answer as: what does food cost in the US? If you're in New York, you'll answer something much higher than if you live in Laredo...

Just like in other countries, it's cheaper in the suburbs, cheaper away from the main cities, etc. Plus, you have to keep in mind that the basic foods aren't the same. Pasta for example is much cheaper over there, as it is the students' staple food! So is bread. Bread in San Francisco is $3 for a baguette, whereas in France, it's more like 1 euro ($1.3 about from these days' change).

In general though, the euro has caused a lot of inflation. The staple foods are much more expensive - the above mentioned baguette used to cost 45c. in 2002... that's 100% inflation in 5 years...
