Question:

How much does it cost, monthly, to own a cat?

The kitten I'm hoping to adopt will come with his/her vaccinations, wormings, and will be spayed/neutered. If you add up the costs of kitty litter and food and anything else they might need [I've had cats before, but I can't think of anything else], how much would it be?

  1. Yvonne- Food and good food, will cost about 11.00 a week and the litter is about 14.00 a month-  you will need to get ceramic dishes- which may cost more than plastic- say 10 bucks-  its the vet bills that kill you-  you may want to look into a health program for him- for around 18 dollars a month- these types of programs are great - cat toys can be made from the simplest things- they like the plastic lids off of milk carton for example- they are like miniature hockey pucks for kitty.  But here is a difference between the start up costs and the monthly costs- monthly if you include the plan is about 76 bucks month.

  2. Once your cat is fixed etc you will only be spending about $50 a year on shots etc.  I would say with Food Litter Toys etc I spend about $30 a month but I spoil by kittens and I have 2 of them.  I would say the average would be about $20 a month.

  3. u should no you have had cats b4 havent u

  4. It will probably be about  $100-150 a month. this is including  toys, brushes, litter, food, water, and a cat bed. But, when you take them to the vets, it may go up more, depending on the vet you go to. Here, at the vets I work at, it is about $50-100 for vaccinations, but I don't know about there.

    Hope this helps!

  5. Since first shots and spaying are all taken care of you're on a good start money-wise. For one cat I spend approximately $20/month (I have 3 so I simply divided total costs by 3). That's taking into consideration my cats eat a higher priced brand of dry food as well as canned. If you set aside $20-30 a month for emergency funds in case of illness or injury you can then use that saved money for annual vet visits and continue saving the rest for a potential emergency. As far as toys, bedding, etc. are concerned that's all up to you on how much you want to spend. My own cats have condos, a cat tree, toys up the wazoo and what do they play with most? A long thin bungee cord hanging in a doorway.....*sighs* I think we have spent well over $300 over the years on toys and accessories but they are our "children" so we do tend to spoil them. But all in all, realistically, $50 a month, including saving for an emergency trip, is very reasonable.

  6. with food, litter, toys, yearly vaccinations, I would say about $100 per month that is if there are no emergencies.

  7. Have never really given the issue much thought. Wanted a cat - got a cat. Wanted a dog - got a dog. Wanted kids - big mistake!

  8. $100
