How much does it cost for a dog to fly on an airplane with you?

I read that depending on the airline, it doesn't cost extra sometimes.

The dog I'm wanting to travel with is a 1yr old female Blue Heeler who is about 20-27 pounds. I can carry her perfectly fine and she would be able to fit in a kennel under the airplane seat just fine, as well as a medium sized dog carrier. [I refuse to bring any of my larger dogs as they would have to ride in the luggage carrier at the bottom of the plane.]

How much extra would flying her from ATL to Vegas with me cost? T hanks. :)

  1. Illyria gave you pretty much all the info you need.  You will need a health certificate for sure. I work for American Airlines; we charge $80 one way for each dog/cat brought onboard.  Five animals are allowed in Coach class.

I have to say, however, that 20-27 pounds sounds like a pretty good sized dog.  Are you absolutely sure the carrier she is in will fit UNDER the seat in front of you?  I take my 15-lb. dog with me and she barely fits in her carrier which is the maximum size allowed onboard.   The airlines say your dog must be able to stand up in carrier and be able to turn around.

Just be very sure before you head to the airport or she may end up in the cargo compartment.

  2. Check with your airline early on, because there are only a limited number of slots for pet transport on each flight. There are also rules about size of carrier and health requirements, and each airline may have different rules, so the best info you'll get will be from the airline you're planning to travel on. You'll probably need to get a certificate of health from your vet, and that will require updating shots if necessary and a checkup within a certain period before the flight.

It cost me $80 to fly my cat with me in the cabin, but that was 4 years ago, and I imagine that, like everything else, has gone way up.

    Good luck!

  3. Your airport has a page about this, they redirect you to your airline:

    I hope this helps!
