With BT, you can get caller ID free (as long as you have a phone that supports it). It's part of their "Privacy" (or something) policy. I subscribed to it online (i think it was under additional services). You can subscribe as part of an extras package, or free if its by itself. Within 30 mins, my new phone was displaying the telephone numbers of people who called =)

Most phone companies that I've seen now offer caller ID as a basic service. I use AT&T for my cell and Vonage for my "home line" and don't pay a cent for caller ID. If your provider is charging you, you might want to shop around for a better deal.

It strictly depends on your telephone service provider.

With virtually all home phone VoIP services, caller-ID is usually included for free.  And that is because Caller-ID info is, by default, transmitted with all telephone calls.

But, the telco's want to nickle and dime us for every little extra feature and charge for what is actually already there for free.  They just "block" the caller-ID info and want you to pay to have it "unblocked".
