  1. I spent around 40-50 bucks a day when I was in Italy.

Towards the south was much cheaper, like Naples.

There, food was dirt cheap and GOOD!!! I could get a wonderful meal for around 4 euros including beer!  But it was pizza, and pizza I got was 2.50 for a personal pie that filled me to the gills!

Since there are two of you, you can split a lot of things which will help on cost.

If you go to smaller cities, you shouldnt even bother with transportation, just hoof it. Bigger cities like Rome, the public transit is good, and if you ride on a bus, and its full (which it is most of the time) you dont even have to pay. Its so crowded you just shove yourself in there and hold on tight. You will notice not many people pay for the bus, lol.  As for the metro, I would pay b/c they checked tickets several times when I was there.

Venice will be expensive though, so conserve money. Or buy some lovely lace that is made there.

Florence wasnt all that bad, but I did splurg one night in Florence on the food, just stay away from the tourist restaurants, they arent good and they are super expensive to begin with.

But do treat yourself to a Gelati though!

  2. Depends on the cities you want to go, but maybe around $40 USD each person. Considering mid-level bed, food, and public transportation.

Each city is different, some are cheaper than others, Venice is expensive, so is Milan; Rome is a bit more cheap.

With a daily budget of 30euros, you will go and come back fine if you're willing to survive with the very essential. If you're planning some shopping or other fancy stuff you can very well spend 1000's in one day.

  3. See if you can find a copy or used copy of "Let's Go" book on Italy. Gives info on all the inexpensive places.

  4. Use hostelz.com to guage accomodation prices, Northern Italy is much more expensive than sourthern, and much safer. Naples is E3 for a great pizza, but I despise Naples, its very unsafe, the closest Europe gets to a dodgy part of a brazilian city (although Fabric hostel is the best in the world too!). Some places, like Palermo hardly have hostels, and a hotel would cost from E60 per night. Italian food is the best in the world, but the tourist outlets are the worst, so choose carefully. As a rule, I never buy food from a place that displays pictures of what they propose cooking! And calamari in Italy is fantastic!!

  5. I traveled through Euorpe this last summer and spent a lot of time in Italy and I can honestly tell you that the bare minnimum budget that I think is possible is 50 US dollars a day (about 38 euros with the current exchange rate) and that doesn't include transportation between major cities.  First of all, you should look at both the lonely planet Itlay book, as well as Europe on a shoestring (also Lonely Planet).  The Italy book has a lot more stuff in it, but the Europe book is really geared toward low budget traveling.

I was pretty cheap (ie stayed in inexpensive hostels/campgrounds, bought food at grocery stores, etc...) and this was a hard buget to keep, but for the most part it worked.  Just remember long trip transport isn't included in this, but if you have a short trip that isn't too expensive then you might be able to squeeze it into the buget.  Unfortunatly long trip busses are a pain in the butt, which leaves you with the train, and you have to make sure you get the cheap ones cause they vary greatly in price and deffinatly make reservations in the summer.  Also look on hostelworld.com to book accomidation.  They give you the hostels based on price, but you can also see what other people said about it, and what it was rated, cuase sometimes it is worth the extra euro a night to get a free breakfast and stay in a place that isn't a complete dump.  Also plan to book AT LEAST a week in advance in the summer...I ran into this problem myself last summer.  If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and have a great time!!!

Oh, and of course cities like Florence and Venice are more expensive and cities in the South like Naples and in Sicily are cheaper, so plan your itenerary accordingly with your budget.
