  1. I paid about $100 to have my bunny spayed, but that was 8 years ago.  Everyone laughed when I had her spayed, but she is such an awesome pet and I am so glad I did it.  She is still alive & super-healthy.  Save your money.

Here's a good idea... because I have friends that are vets... go visit a local vet office and talk to them about volunteering some of your time to "pay for the spaying".

Since you are a kid, they may let you pay what you can toward it, and then volunteer a couple saturday mornings to help clean up after the animals in their care.  It would help you a lot and also be a rewarding experience.  Vets like to see people who love their animals so much!

  2. if your rabbit is a girl, she would get spayed not neutered.

    spaying costs more than neutering.

it could be up to $200. you dont just want to go somewhere where it will be cheap because spaying can be a dangerous procedure. look for some vets near your area and find out prices and ask how many rabbits they have spayed and how those procedures went.

  3. don't

  4. it is very responsible for you to want what is best for your pet.  it is true that rabbits live longer, healthier lives if they are altered.  unaltered females have an 80% chance of getting cancer and dying by age 3.  if they are altered, rabbits can live as long as 8-15 years!  plus, in the future, you could get her a friend if you wanted to.  unaltered rabbits will fight and cannot be housed together.

here is a great article about spaying and neutering, this should answer any other questions you might have on the subject.

you can follow this link to find a vet in your area...  http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

or if there is not one listed close to you, do a search in the phone book for an *EXOTIC* ANIMAL VET.  if you are still unsure who is experienced with rabbits, try contacting a shelter near you and ask who they send rabbits to.  they may also know of a low-cost spay/neuter program in your area.

i have heard of a spay being anywhere from 100-500 dollars.  it varies according to where you live.  call around and get different prices.  it might be worth it to drive a little bit further (as far as an hour away) if you can get a much lower price.

i spayed my rabbit last fall and it was 185 dollars, including pain meds.  this is not including the initial exam you have to do before the surgery (that was about 60).

share this information with your parents and tell them that this needs to be done for her health.  also, it will improve behavior and litterbox habits and virtually eliminate any smell/spraying.  so if that is something they have concerns about, that is a benefit as well.  perhaps they can pay for some of it and you can do extra chores around the house, or they can count it towards your next birthday/Christmas present.  they will hopefully see this as you making a mature decision to do what is best for your pet.

    good luck!

an added note:  rescued rabbits are usually spayed or neutered before adoption.  if you decide to get another rabbit in the future, please look into adopting.  you will pay an adoption fee of about 50-100 dollars, but you do not have the added expense of doing the surgery yourself... and you get to save a life!

  5. Call around to local vets and ask for quotes.  Usually it is $70-150 for a neuter on a rabbit.  Also check out the Houston SPCA- they offer free spay and neuter to low-income homes, have your parents phone them for details and see if your family qualifies, and if they will do it for a rabbit.

Add: Oh, it's a female, I missed that the first time through- you're looking at $150-$250 for a spay on a female rabbit.
