It depends.

If you do a private adoption in which the mom "voluntarily" relinquishes her parental rights, either through an agency or an attorney, it can cost you anywhere from $15,000 to $40,000, with $20-25 K being the average.

If you adopt from foster care, it will be free or nearly free.

I had a friend who looked into it and she told me it was $20 thousand, and thats only what you pay for the child, its with out the legal fees and all the paper work. It also takes along time, they waited 1 year before they where even allowed to take the child home

A lot. I would guess in the tens of thousands (20 or 30). And it also depends what agency you use. If it's a State adoption I think it's free (or relatively inexpensive), but there are usually older kids available.

But if you want to adopt, please go for it! It is a wonderful thing and the money is not that important (and if you don't have it, there are ways to collect it or pay in chunks)
