  1. I live about two hours from Venice. When I go, I usually end up paying around 30 - 50 euro for a dinner and maybe 15 euro for lunch (prices for one). I have paid as much as 300 euro for lunch for two at Quadri on Piazza San Marco on a special occasion. However, it can be quite a bit more expensive. Generally, the neighborhood restaurants away from the biggest tourist areas are less expensive and have very good food. Also, you can save money by grabbing a panino, bruschetta, etc. Pizza is more expensive than in other parts of Italy, but not too expensive and there are some fast food places where you can get pizza by the slice.

Check the menus for interesting selections and reasonable prices while you're walking around and pick someplace based on that. There are also outdoor markets in a few places around the city (a good one is at Rialto). You can pick up fruit to snack on very reasonably.

A couple of things to be aware of - if you sit in the cafes in Piazza San Marco and order a coffee and/or you will have to pay the coperto (cover charge) and service. If the music combo is playing, there will also be a charge for that. This can turn out to be pretty expensive. If you order at one of the windows on the piazza and sit on the steps, you can still hear the music and people watch much cheaper.

Also, some things (especially seafood like branzino) are priced "per etto" on the menu. That's the price for 100 g. Generally, they will present you with a big, nice looking fish. The weight is pre-cooked with the head, tail, and bones. One guy I knew paid $100 for his fish for lunch. My scallops St Jacques flamed at the table were about $12. The fish was very good though. You just need to pay attention to prices and ask for a smaller fish if you want to pay less.

One of my favorite places is La Zucca. A couple of other places that are pretty good but a bit more expensive are Da Rafaelle and Bistrot du Venise.

  2. Venice is so expensive. I went a few months ago. For a nice sit down dinner your lookin at 75 euro for 2 people. Along the canal is really bad, my husband and I made the bad choice of eating there one night and it cost over 150 dollars. If you "get lost" on the back streets you can find something a lot quieter and cheaper. As far as throughout the day there are pizza stands everywhere that is only like 2 euro for a big slice. My husband ate at every pizza stand we came to. It is worth every penny I spent though because it's so wonderful! Have fun!

  3. A bottle of water in Venice is typically one or two euros. A gelato, depending on the size, is between two and five, and a sandwich or something is between four and seven euros. Sodas are anywhere between two and six euros, and the cans they may come in are smaller than those you'll find back home.

I went with a tour, so I couldn't tell you how much a dinner type thing would cost.

Keep in mind that Italians eat dinner far later than we do.

Also, it costs extra to sit down at a restaurant.

  4. I recommend the Alla Madonna for good, reasonably priced <$30 dinners.

  5. This all depends on where you eat. They do have fast food places, so you would just need to find out what they charge and then use a conversion calculator that you can find on the internet. (www.xe.com) is a good one that you can use.

Yahoo travel has good pages for travel. So I have included that link as well.

    Have a great time!

  6. It does vary quite a bit but a good dinner at a good less touristy restaurant will cost at least 50 Euros for two. Try to eat in one of the less touristed districts and buy your snacks in one of these areas too. Some of our favorite restaurants in Venice are: http://www.venice-italy-veneto.com/venic...

  7. This may not fully answer your question BUT I'm sure it will help you save quite a few Euros.

There are supermarkets in Venice (for example: BILLA & the COOP). I suggest you pick up cold cuts, bread and a bottle of wine (don't forget to buy the wine s***w!) or some beers and picnic. there are plenty of comfortable places to sit around town (and even a lovely park at Sant'Elena next to the Biennale). In some of the supermarkets you can even buy baked chickens and even other typs of prepared foods.

The city is expensive and this would be a good way to help you save some money and eat some good local foods.

  8. My suggestion is to read the menus outside the restaurants and be aware that when you seat in a restaurant you are going to pay the "coperto", an upcharge. Like in other places lunch and dinner are priced differently so if you check the menus by day beware of the increased prices for dinner. Areas like San Marco are usually pricey.
