  1. There are a few different DNA tests available, and your gender plays into which test(s) are available for you.  Here are the basics on the tests:

    Maternal Lineage Test (Mitochondrial DNA):

Learn about the ancient ancestry and early human migrations of your maternal line forbearers. For both female and male participants.   $179

Paternal Lineage Test (Y-Chromosome 33) — Recommended:  Find genetic cousins and learn about ancient paternal ancestry. This is the recommended test for genealogy. For male participants only.   $149

Advanced Paternal Lineage Test (Y-Chromosome 46):  Thirteen additional markers provide a more precise comparison with other participants who also have the advanced test. For male participants only.  $199

  2. I think you can find out what you want using this link:

  3. Y & Mitochondrial are used to match you up with another family tree.  However, that is a very very small part of your DNA.

Most of your DNA is Autosomal.  There are test that will vaguely give your origins as Northern European, East Asian etc but nothing specific.  The only way you can get percentages is if they use autosomal not just Y & Mitochondrial.

Y is passed from father to son only.

Mitchondrial is passed from mother to both sons & daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children.

If you get back to your 6xgreat grandparents, for instance, you are directly descended from 510 individuals.  Out of those 510, you have the mitchondrial DNA from only 8 and if you are a male, you have the Y DNA from only 8, but you have the autosomal DNA from all 510.
