That depends on where you go and what kind of glasses/contacts you want.  If you see a specialist or OD in private practice, you can expect to pay more than in a chain location.  If you want to see a doctor with the newest testing equipment for contact lens fit, you'll pay more.  If you want designer frames and the latest and greatest in lens technology, you'll pay more.  

    I live in South Texas and work for a private optometrist who specializes in difficult contact lens fittings and carries mostly designer frames (Fendi, Coach, Dior).  An exam and contact lens fitting can be as much as $400; glasses as much as $1000 with all the bells and whistles.  But in my area, you can also go to Walmart and pay $40 for contact lens fitting and $99 for glasses.  The choice is yours and you have to decide what qualities are important in your eye care provider.
