  1. If you send the item into Apple directly, they charge a flat rate out of warranty service fee.

    Per my memory, and this was 9 months ago mind you, the flat rate out of warranty service fee was around $850.

    Your best bet is to search for the parts on google and find them cheaply, then take the computer to a repair shop and pay them to install the parts for you, or have a computer saavy friend do so.


  2. I took a look at ifixit.com. An upper and lower case for a 15" costs about $500 total. The question is, how are you going to get it installed? Replacing either one requires some small tools. And the upper isn't too bad, but replacing the lower case means dismantling your entire machine into dozens of components. Not a job for the faint-hearted, as well as utterly negating any sort of warranty coverage.

    Apple's price might be worth paying... or maybe you should ignore it until you're ready to buy a new one.
