I'm sure different schools have different prices, I'm wondering what the lower bound of the price range is. Oh also and how long it takes. Thanks.

  1. Some correct information above, but mostly garbage.

Right now, a Private Certificate will cost you between $6,000 and $9,000, and it is rising every day because of fuel costs.  Things will get better after the election.  It takes four months to two years, depending on how much time you can devote to it.

Your Commercial Certificate with instrument, multi-engine, and Instructor ratings will cost approx. $15,000 to $25,000.

If you paid for an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (no longer a "rating"), out of your own pocket, you would be down as much as $80,000.

Your employment prospects will be shaky.  Better if you go through the military, but the future is not looking really bright for the air transportation industry.

Entry level pilots make like $15/hour or maybe $22,000 if on salary.  An overseas captain can still make $150K or more, but those who are starting out now may not ever reach that level.

  2. I got my private and my instrument rating about 5 years ago cost me about  5000 bucks not counting all the time driving to the field.   Might have cost me less but i had to break in 4 different instructors.   [long story]

  3. I think it's $2,000.  It's pretty expensive.  I know that it is.  Yeah!

  4. Thousands.

The time involved depends on how fast you learn and what you are going for.

  5. You can get some kinds of flying jobs with just a commercial license: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_certi... Airline pilots require an Air Transport Pilot rating: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_certi...

To get a commercial certificate, if you stay in single engine piston aircraft for as much of your minimum hours as possible, you'd be looking at $25,000 to $30,000 out of pocket costs. To get an ATP rating, some one (probably not the person getting the rating, entirely, as many people going for an ATP rating use military time, or earnings from commercial jobs to fund it, or get into flight clubs, etc. to lower the cost of their flight hours) will have spent $150,000+.

A new first officer at a regional airline, a first starting step on the airline jobs ladder, might make, if he/she is lucky, $20,000 annually. But, a lot of people who used to work for airlines are on furlough, waiting for call back to work, because of airline bankruptcies, mergers, and down sizing. Two U.S. airlines have ceased operations in the last week:
