Question:

How much does it cost to have a kitten spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped in California?

My husband I and are thinking of adopting two kittens from a local foster program. They are charging $120 per kitten, and that seems a little expensive to me. However, I know they'll already be spayed or neutered, they'll already have all their shots, and they'll be micro-chipped.

We were wondering, if we decided to get to FREE kittens instead, how much would it cost to:

-- get them spayed/neutered?

-- get them vaccinated?

-- get them micro-chipped?

We live in the San Francisco Bay Area, if that helps.

Thanks!

  1. First, if you can afford it, I think it's a reasonable price for getting kitties with all these services, because it also supports the foster system/shelter that helps animals to be adopted and not put down.

I was a student when I found my stray kitty and had a loan income of 12K for everything from rent to health care to food, etc. Obviously it would not be a responsible choice for me to go out and get a pet since I clearly couldn't afford one, but since she was homeless and seemed to choose my home (you know how kitties can be!), I had to do right by her.  I

I put her spaying on my credit card, which was about 120 or so (maybe a bit more). Anyway, the money meant nothing to me even though I was short on cash, because she really needed it done, and she was able to just stay living with me instead of going through the SPCA system. My vaccinations for her were probably another 100 or so, but again, totally worth it.

I think you might be getting a great deal, but I live in VA, so who knows.

If it's a reputable shelter program, any profit they make is likely given back to the overall program so is something you can feel good about.

p.s. I think you're smart to get two kitties--they are no more work than one, but can keep each other company. Early and strict discipline (so many people think cats can't be disciplined--wrong!) plus outlets for their outside needs if they are indoor only (a SERIOUS scratching/climbing area--more than a few feet high) is the key to them not ruining your home! Trust me--I had both indoor and outdoor--what a difference when my cat could go outside! Enjoy!!!

  2. How much does it cost?

    Too much!

Many SPCA's offer free spay/neuter/vaccination, (TX)

and other programs have sliding scale depending on your income..  .

Probably have to pay for micro-chip.

  3. $120 a piece for fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered kittens with microchips is a bargain.

Spay/neuter from a humane society or SPCA is typically $50 or so each, shots at a shelter clinic is $30-50 and microchips are typically another $50.  If you go to a private vet, it will be a lot more.
