Question:

How much does it cost to have a tree pruned professionally? UK?

We have a small garden and several years ago some plonker put in an Indian Bean Tree. This hasn't been pruned for several years (we only moved in 2 months ago). I know you don't need to prune them but with height and spread between 15 - 20m, it really does need to be done. The garden is only 20ft by 40ft. I don't want to kill the tree so I think I should get someone in to prune it but I have no idea on the cost. Anyone had a 25ish foot tree pruned recently? Uk answers please.

  1. There is no point asking people here how much it will cost. They can't see the tree!

Get quotes from 3 REPUTABLE tree surgeons (ask around locally) and go with the one that seems to talk the most sense. Cost depends entirely on difficulty - ie; time spent, amount of cuttings, access, objects to avoid etc etc.

Incidentally, Catalpa will take nicely to quite hard pruning but i wouldn't leave it much longer into the summer.

  2. I had two fir trees felled for 30 quid.

  3. I agree with big Kev. get 3 quotes from reputable loggers and choose who you think will do the job best. I would not expand the term arborist to these people. An arborist is someone qualified with a degree to carry out the practice of aboriculture. This consists mainly of  maintaining the health of special trees on estates and what have you. These people may be reffered to as tree monkies.

  4. Hi, my neighbour  had his trees done a few weeks ago,  cost him  about  ÃƒÂ‚£200.   that was for two trees  trimmed,  took them all day, he had to get council permission first, so check with your local council if you can just trim them without there permission

  5. tree surgeons will come round and give estimates, get a couple from them, there are a few cowboys out there though so look out for them, our neighbour has got a monkey puzzle tree that has been voted 2nd best in the country, its bigger than there house, it has got a preservation order on it, they have to get a seperate insurance on it in case it falls on there house, they were quoted £10,000 for a pruning as a suit of armer has to be worn to climb it, so quotes will vary from tree to tree

  6. Hi - your Catalpa Bignoniodes Aurea can have the canopy raised and be reduced all around fairly simply, but they can look horrid if it  is done poorly.  Visit www.trees.org.uk (the website of the Arboricultural Association) to find a local approved contractor who will then give you a no-obligation quote, and some advice into the bargain.  It should cost around £180 - £240 depending on access and what you want done with the debris.  Good luck :-)

  7. I would say this could be done in one day for around £300
