How much does it cost to learn MMA?

I am 16, and I was thinking about leaning MMA. How much it is for the gear, and what the monthly fee is(on average).

Also, what do you recommend. I don't know much about it. I don't really know the types, and what the difference is. I really like the movie "Never Back Down" if that helps any.

-Thanks

  1. It completely depends on the gym and quality of training.  Expect a minimum of $60-$75 per month (local school with Joe Schmo head instructor), $175 max per month (Xtreme Couture, highly touted professional fighter head instructor).  Look to see if you even have an MMA school nearby, as decent schools are quite rare.

The equipment is not very expensive compared to the monthly expense of lessons.

  2. usually 100 per month     1000 yearly

  3. head gear- $50

heavy and light shin pads- $20- $40

    mouth guard- $2 and $25

    boxing gloves- 12oz (free), 16oz ($30)

mma gloves- $20 (solid training ones)

$130+ some shorts ($50) and 1 Atama rash guard $53  about $200 on gear

my monthly fee is $150, for unlimited classes, and i go to about

4-5 BJJ classes a week about and hour each

3 kickboxing classes about 45 mins to 1 hour

    2 Aikido and traditional JJ

and about 2 1/2 hours of open mat

my schools mma program is...well lacking bc once a week if we are lucky will the instructors do anything having to do with mma, even though one of the instructors coaches Garbiale Gonzaga and the other is a Vale Tudo champion from Brazil,

things that will effect the price, is who runs the school, if its a school like Gracie or the pitt its likely to be $150-200 , smaller schools are less, my suggestion is find a school that offers alot of classes that u want bc out of a block of about 46 classes i only take 10 at the most, not relay a good deal

  4. If you're joining this sport just because you happened to enjoy a movie I really don't think you're going to stick it out. If I were you I wouldn't waste my money on buying all the gear you'll need because I really doubt you'll be in it for long.

Now I personally haven't seen the movie but I'm assuming it shows all the highlights of MMA and none of the 40 hours+ (per week) of training, the broken bones. the patience or the dedication it takes to actually do mma.

I suggest going to a club that offers it and speak to them first, maybe watch a few classes and then decide if you really want to do it and spend the money on the gear.

Sounds expensive, but most gyms will sell all of this for a discounted price.

Gyms prices vary. Normally they range from $60-$200 a month. My classes are $120 for unlimited amount of classes. 2 classes a week is $80, and 1 class is $60

MMA is basically professional fighting from all ranges of combat. Stand-Up is mostly Muay Thai, but other fighters do karate or kickboxing. Wrestling is not crucial, but I feel it is extremely necessary. It focus's on take downs and take down defense. Which can work for you if your a stand up fighter or ground fighter. When you are on your back, most of it is Brazilian jiu jitsu. A submission grappling art.

    Good Luck and Enjoy!

  6. depends on where you train, who's teaching, and how much you train. obviously 2hour sessions twice a week will cost less than eight hour sessions five times a week. also it depends on your geographic location, some areas have higher rates, but also may have better coaches. the price should reflect what you get out of it. good solid mma will not be cheap. check your phone book or search for local clubs. call them up if they dont list membership fees online. remember gyms are businesses, theyll be more than happy to help you out.
