  1. The real problem in Rome is to find a cheap room/appartment.

They can be very expensive, expecially if you want to stay close to the city center. But living outside the city it's a real mess for the traffic.

The rest (food, lifestyle and so on) is similar to the rest of Italy (you have expensive shops but you also have supermarkets and cheap shops).

What makes the difference is the salary level, that is not so high if you compare it with the cost of life.

At the end, I think that if you want an independent appartment you can "survive" with 1.200 € per month (1.907 USD) but to have a normal life (with holdays and a normal social life) you need 1.800 € per month (2.859 USD)

If you can share an appartment or rent a room you can make it with 1000 € per month (1.588 USD) but forget to go out every weekend spending money and clubbing.

    Ciao

    Silvia

  2. If you want to keep a low profile ( shopping twice a year, restaurant only on your birthday, cinema- what is a cinema?, travel by public transportation, forget about lobsters and caviar  and so on ) I think that 1200 euros (1854,56 us dollars TODAY)per month are sufficient if you are a couple and both partneres are working; you could keep an higher profile by earning about 2500 euros (3947 us dollars TODAY) per partner; in this case you could afford a nicer lifestyle. Hope I helped you!!
