How much does it cost to make a handmade lap quilt???

i have about 15 bucks...how much more do i need to make a lap quilt???

You could make one with $15.00.  You don't need tons of fabric.  All you need are needles, thread, fabric and batting (which you can get by the yard).

It depends on what fabric you chose.  You can get it for $1 and $2 per yard at WalMart.  Check the remnant bins, too. You can get a lap quilt size batting for less than $5.  $15 should be plenty if you don't buy expensive fabric.

The backing and the batting are going to take almost 1/3 to 1/2 of your funds.

If you know any people who sew ask if they have any scraps, or fabric to donate. I frequently purge my fabrics and look for anyone who wants my discards. You would be amazed at what people have and can contribute to the effort. You can also use fabrics from clothing that has some "life" left ( try to use 100 percent cotton). I made a quilt of old jeans fabrics once.

It does not take much to get a good assortment of fabrics for the top or the pieced portion. Play with the color combinations. "Scrap" quilts are quite popular now.

If you want you can do the Walmart bin, for the 1 - 2 dollar stuff , but I would collect first , fill in with the purchased.

If I had a way I would send you a box of my scrap , and leftover fabrics.

There are utilitarian quilts that have traditionally been made up of clothing from our own closets.  Clothes that suddenly shrunk in the winter washing or got stained in spots.  There's still good fabric in other spots.

Use some of your $'s to buy (on sale) a good cotton blend batting and consider a small sheet for your backing.  

Lots of experience quilters have fabric in their stash they'd really like to get rid of; ask 'em if they'd like to share.  Try a garage sale or two at the some of those folks' house.

It CAN be done with just $15!
