Has anyone ever made a call & knows approx. how much? If you have a cell phone with you, can you get service? I guess it would depend on where you traveling. I just was wondering.

  1. Satellite calls are pretty expensive. It is up to the cruise line how much they will charge the passenger. The cheapest I experienced was about US$7 per minute.

Depending on your network service and where you are, you might be able to use your own cell phone. Don't expect to get reception in the middle of nowhere, you'll need to be close enough to land to get reception.

Basically, if not an emergency, don't use the satellite phone onboard the ship.

  2. Your cell phone will ot work when you are at sea - because - there are no cell towers on the ocean.  When you get close to land, they may work - depending on what cell service you have.

Ship to Shore calls (or vice-versa) are super-expensive.  Figure around $7 per minute.

In case of emergency, the phones are available but just to say HI to a friend, that is a mighty expensive phone call.

  3. usually you can use your cell phone no more than 10 miles offshore but farther than that  you will have to use the ship phone which costs $8/min.

  4. get ready to pay around 40-50 bucks per call. Cruise from Fla. - Bahamas in 2006. This was just to get an answering machine.
