  1. I've never heard of a mare in my area getting spayed. Horses do NOT do well under surgery so therefore surgery is usually avoided.

Spaying a mare shouldn't be necessary, in my opinion.

  2. I have never heard of spaying a mare

  3. $1235.40

very expensive here, i had a mare quite a few years back that need to be spayed

  4. A farm I worked on has a mare who had a large tumor on her left ovary. It was removed through a flank incision. That is as close as I've ever heard.

  5. It isn't necessary with mares, it's safer not to

  6. my friend spayed her horse cause she was into breeding and had alot of studs and didnt want to sell or breed her and it was around $300

  7. Haha I love "Jamie M's" answer! Yeah, usually spaying a mare isn't necessary. If you are trying to turn her out with stallions for whatever reason, that is REALLY stupid and unsafe for her. Keep her in a pasture with other mares, and maybe geldings as long as they are NOT proud cut.

  8. You don't really need too, it's an intrusive surgery (like with all female animals) and it is rarely done.

Cats and dogs are all commonly neutered and spayed because unneutered males can, and will, roam. Horses don't tend to, and wild horses don't live near domestic horses so there's no chance of a mare getting pregnant unless she is actually in a paddock with a stallion.

I'm not sure how much it would cost if you really did want it done, because no mare I know has had it done, but it wouldn't be cheap.

But, unless you, or someone you know, has a mare living in a paddock with a stallion but you don't want it to get pregnant, you really don't need to get it done.

  9. lol please tell me you don't own a horse...

First off you NEUTER a MALE.

Second off you DON'T (typically) SPAY a MARE!!

I saw what it was called somewhere...but I ahve never heard of anyone actually doing it. They would probley have to be in pain or hae seomthing wrong with their reproduction system to fix a mare ^^

Horses aren't like dog...stray stallions aren't typically running around freely breeding with your unfixed mares xD

  10. there is 3 ways that the vets can do it....it cost anywhere between $200-$400 (depending on what the vet says)....I was going to have it done w/ my mare......the vet i was going to use did it regularly and it wasnt a big deal.....but for some vets its not something done everyday so you wanna make sure and check and ask your vet lots of q's....

  11. Spay, spay, spay. Neuter is used for males.

The people I know who have had it done paid between $1200-2000, depending on where, how and why it was done.

Some mares are holy terrors when in season, to the point it makes it difficult to ride/show them. A couple years on regumate comes close to costing what a spay would. Some mares get cysts or tumor on their ovaries and need to be spayed for health reasons. And in some cases, the owner as the sense to realize that just because it has a uterus, doesn't mean it has to be bred - why bother dealing with an in-season mare?

  12. Horses aren't typically spayed - however, it can be done.  Typically it's only done if the horse has behavior issues, it has medical issues, or in extreme circumstances of turning a spayed mare out with a stallion for a buddy."

There recently was a huge article in one of the recent months AQHA journal.  It was very informative.

A typical spay costs near $1000 depending on where you live and the veterinarian chosen.  However, they have started doing a less invasive technique that costs drastically less (closer to $300).

If you horse just has behavior issues while in heat - you can consider putting her on regumate to regulate her heat cycles.

Talk to your veterinarian and they'll go over the pros and cons of spaying and the costs.

    Best wishes!

  13. I have also heard that there is an under the skin hormone capsule that can be injected that would prevent the mare from going into heat.  I'm not sure the name of it but I heard of a show barn using it to prevent mares from being "night-mareish" when showing, etc.

Also, the Regumate must be used with A LOT of care as it can affect humans and their own cycles if female.
