Hi, I am writing from Italy , and I 'd like to know how much does it cost to parents to pay for your kids university in the US.

All of my life I have been hearing that University is VERY expensive in America, but HOW MUCH expensive?

let's suppose you have 2 kids, you want them both to get a college degree, what's the minimum expense?

Here in Italy, there are good University but they're all private and cost a bundle.

The Government Universities are good too but expensive either. No less than 2000 Euros ( 1600 $ I think) between taxes, books etc.

I had to give up studying because my family income couldnt allow me to such a big expense like Uni, so I am curious about the US.

  1. bout 10k for and associated 200 + for a doctorate from an ivey leageue med school

  2. Depends on the school.  Public universities average $3000 a semester for tuition, add another $1000 for books.  Private universities can range from $5000 a semester to over $40000.  There are also cost of living factors, since most college kids can't survive on a part time income from working.  Either way, it's not cheap.

  3. It depends on the university public/private how long it takes to get the degree and if you live on/off campus or commute from home... On the avg. a state school is cheaper, than private.  Community College is cheaper still... The avg. cost is ball park $30,000 + a piece!  So, it's definetly a HUGE expense...

  4. Roaring M has it right, a top private U will cost $50,000 for each child, per year, for 4 years. It is actually more if you consider that costs usually increase at least 5% per year, the $50,000 is this year's cost. Also keep in mind that while you may be able to cut costs for housing and food a small amount, most top schools require that everyone live on campus and eat there the first year.

For public schools the cost for an international student can be half that. But not at the best ones. Berkeley, UVA and Michigan, the top state colleges, cost about $40,000 per year.

If you go way down the food chain to community colleges, your children could go for under $10,000 per year to most, not including housing and food.

  5. The cost of education in the US goes up every year.  Right now for two children to complete a degree it will be approximately 100,000 dollars.  Of course it depends on the degree but in most cases that amount is about right.

  6. Hello there,

The U.S. has 2 kinds of universities: Private and (cheaper) Public.

International students pay more at Public universities so this difference shouldn't make a difference on your choice. It's called out-of-state tuition.

Johnson & Wales University charges about $33,000/academic year (3 quarters) at undergraduate level, and $8000 to $10000 are estimated for room & board expenses. 20,000 Euros per academic year.

Other issues to consider are your major, location of the university (room & board, and other living expenses are linked to your lifestyle)

You can always transfer credits (if you already have college level studies)

You won't be allowed to work off campus and working on campus pays too little.

Some universities would provide have programs that would let you finish faster and at a lower cost.

If you have more questions on this matter or questions about Johnson & Wales University, feel free to contact me

    Best of luck

  7. In the US, a top private university will cost about $30,000 (20,100 Euros) per year for tuition, for one student. That does not include books, housing, fees, food, etc. University takes about four years to complete. At the end, the cost of tuition would be about $120,000, which is around 80,400 Euros, plus books and etc.

If I added in fees and books and housing, I'd estimate the total cost at $50,000 per year, or 33,500 Euros. For one year. For one student.

There are public universities as well, which are supported by the governments of their states, and thus of lower cost to people who live in those states. Tuition there might be around $8,000 per year, which is 5,400 Euros. By the time the student gets her degree, it would have cost around $32,000 just for tuition, or about 21,500 Euros.

Naturally, almost no one can actually afford this, so most people fund their studies via loans and whatever scholarships they can get. They have to begin paying back the loans six months after they graduate.
