How much does it cost to patent something such as a cartoon character?

  1. You cannot patent a cartoon character.  See : http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/mpe...   for the scope of what is patentable.  

    Basically, inventions must have utility (usefulness) and a cartoon character does not.  

    You could apply for federal copyright protection.  See www.copyright.gov for federal copyright information.  It is cheap to apply (about $100) and you can do it yourself if you take the time.  I think an attorney will do it for $500 or less.
