  1. Just pennies. The cost is in processing personnel. Where I worked the average cost of cutting a check was about $300.

    Those people who had direct deposit ended up costing more because we had to guarantee payment dates, and when things got skrewed up, people ended up with overdue payments, etc.

    The only place I'm aware of where doing away with printed checks saved money was a case where they were still printed on card stock (a hold-over from batch processing) and the material was expensive.
