I'm in North Carolina and we are going to rent a place that has one, this is our first experience with one. I don't know if there is already gas in it or if we will have to refill it before winter. How much does it usually cost to get one refilled? Is it a few hundred or are we looking at a few thousand dollars?

  1. Standard tanks are 275 gal.

& we needed to fill ours twice possibly a third time during the winters here in Philadelphia. You should do better in N C

  2. Standard tank size is 275 gallon, but there'll always be some fuel in the tank, and it wouldn't get filled completely, so count on 200-250 for a fillup.

Obviously as someone said, the important issue is how much you actually burn thru in a season, and what you pay per gallon.

Try to find an oil buying coop in your area, you can save upwards of 50c per gallon.  The good news is that with the recent drop in crude prices, heating oil has declined considerably, the lowest current coop price in the Philly area is about $3.94.  Still around $1.50 higher than last year at this time, but off the near $4.50 highs.

  3. The current price seems to be about 4.50 / gallon. If memory serves me correctly, common tank sizes are 200 and 250 gallons. So that means a fillup will probably cost about $1000.00 The far more important question is how many times a year does it need to be filled up? I would strongly urge you not to rent unless they're willing and able to show you the receipts for heating oil for the past couple of years. (And check the dates to try to make sure they haven't left any out.)
