We don't have air vents into the garage. We don't want windows. We need an outlet put in. We don't know how to do the floor. We have area rugs. The dryer vent is in the garage, how do we deal with that. We don't have much to spend but need the extra room.

  1. what do u want to put into the room?  any framing of walls? drywall, plumbing?....sound like a room already , just need a bed

  2. First thing you need to do, is find out if you need a permit to remodel, and have the work inspected.  Call your local city, or county offices to find that out.

There are some things you can try doing yourself as a "Do It Yourself" project, but there are some things that should be done by experienced hands... electricity is one of those things.  I'd strongly recommend that you get some estimates.

You can hire a contractor who will oversee all the work, or you can hire individual services yourself... an electrician for the extra circuit(s), HVAC to run new vents, etc...

Building codes normally require you to have 2 exits from any room... windows usually count as one of these exits, so that's something you'll need to address....either put in another door, or a window.

The dryer vent should be rerouted to outside, if it isnt already.

Concrete floors can be painted or stained.... or you can have flooring installed.. carpet, laminates, etc.

If you have a garage door, it will need to be removed, and a wall put in its place.

If there is no insulation in the outer walls you'll want to add it.

If this were my house, I would check on the permit first, then get the electrical run, before anything else, keeping in mind, if you want to put an outlet where the door is now, or where you will place a new door or window.  (I'd put the window in the new wall, myself).

I'd suggest that you start calling some contractors for estimates.... have them come out, and look at your garage, and talk over the project with them.  You can learn a lot just by that.

That's also the best way for you to get prices, because labor and materials do cost differently depending on where you are at.

    Good Luck
