I have a road bike which weighs about 20 pounds and would like to know how much it would cost to ship it across the US. Would it be cheaper to check it when I fly back to atlanta for school. (I'm flying delta). Thanks

  1. Based on 40 lbs. Package dimensions of 12x36x78, UPS estimates about $55.00 for regular ground service from SF to Atlanta. In transit time would be about 5 days.

If you go to http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/index.j... they have a section where you can calculate shipping costs.

  2. I don't know how much the airline charges, but UPS would probably be about $50.

  3. The cost depends on the shipping weight, which will be way more than 20 pounds when boxed, and insurance.  My 15 pound Kuota ships at over 40 pounds, but that includes a Trico hard case as well as helmet and some tools.  Without insurance FedEx ground will cost you about $40.00 to Atlanta, which is less than the airline will charge you.  I recently shipped mine from Omaha to Atlanta by FedEx for $40.00 plus insurance.

Also, both FedEx and UPS will handle your bike much more carefully than Delta. I've shipped with all 3 and Delta is the worst. If you are just using a cardboard box do NOT ship with Delta.

My main travel bike has S&S couplers and fits into a case that will ship as regular luggage on the airlines.  Also, the case is so strong that I don't worry about Delta's gorillas handling of it.
