I'm looking to ship a horse from Ohio to South Carolina. Its about 486.96 miles or 7.0 hours 54 minutes. I have NO clue as to how much it costs to ship a horse. I understand rates a different for different haulers and you'll have to pay more for better care, but what is the average going price?

  1. It would be difficult to say because of the fuel surcharges now, but I would think $ 1.50 to $2. a mile...The big thing is to look for a reputable carrier. I have used coast to coast transporters and had really good luck. I just didn't look for the cheapest.

  2. Most want the cost of the gas, plus some. That would be at least 100 dollars for gas (assuming 4$ per gallon gas and a 20mpg truck), plus whatever they want  as extra.

  3. Hello,

Call or email Becky and Jeff for a quote.  They are based out of Ohio.  I HIGHLY recommend them as shippers, they are GREAT!  Your horse would travel in style and be taken care of by a pro!

  4. You need to check with those who haul animals.  They will give you a rate and then you can compare.  They will not ever take your horse out of the trailer either.

They will charge you by the mile and will get your horse at its destination as quickly as possible.  You just need to call and get estimates.

  5. Guesstimate:   1.75 to 2.50 loaded mile.  Our trainer charged us 1.50 and she was being very, very nice.  I would think you would pay between 800-1,100.00 for that trip.  If you can find a hauler that is going with several horses to the same area, it might run cheaper but you are on their time schedule so you may have to wait for your horse and not get to a pick a day for arrival.  Box stalls are more of course.

    Hope this helps.

  6. I have been hearing from others that I know that transport that they charge a flat fee for the 'stall' ($100) and then mileage after that ($2.00 now).

I had gotten alot of quotes from many transporters when I had to move from NH to NC.

The guy that I got was one that provided a box stall, straw, was licensed and insured, and had experience..but was not $$.

This was in 2006.  I paid $1100 for two horses in box stalls.  No other horses were on the trip.

Others were charging $1600 for both horses for this trip.

It's 'almost' the same distance but now you'd have to tack on some $ because of the gas.

Call him!  He is very friendly and your horse's health is his #1 concern.  I loved him!  He'll give you a quick quote.
