I recently adopted a pair of female rats. They are around 3 months old. I have read about the benefits of having them spayed. How much would it cost, and what would I look for in a vet?

  1. I would NOT recomend spaying or neutering rats. Anesthesia (what they use to put you under for surgery), can be very dangerous to smaller animals. The smaller the animal, the higher the risk of complications.

Not only that, but spaying is a complicated surgery for such a small animal, and that alone leads to a lot of health risks

Although there are some benefits, the main one being the lowered risk of mammory cancer, I feel that the risks far outweight the benefits

  2. I used to keep pet rats. I haven't heard anything about the benefits of spaying them before. It would be fairly expensive, spaying a kitten runs about $125.00 right now here in Wisconsin. I don't know that it is worth the expense. The only benefit that I can think of is that they might live a little longer. (Rats are sweet and wonderful pets, but they generally only live about 2 to 3 years). Good luck with your sweet ratties!

  3. Costs will vary from vet to vet! I'm glad you're considering spaying your rats. When done by an experienced small animal vet, the risks are minimal.

Spaying will greatly reduce the chances of benign mammary and pituitary tumors later in life (both common in unspayed females) and eliminate any risk of pyometra.

  4. it don't cost much, if you can find a cat it will do the job for free

  5. than it would be about the same as az,this is why i didnt get mine spayed, about $200.but check with a vet just in case
