How much does it cost to spay/neuter hamsters? Do they even need to be spayed/neutered?

I'm wondering how much it is because if it costs a lot I don't know if my parents will let me get a hamster. I want to know so I can start saving! :)

  1. No they do not need to be spayed or fixed. Unless you have a boy and a girl in the same cage. It will cost a lot and the hamster might not live through it. So its not worth it! hope this helped! :) :)

  2. hamsters should live separately  cuz they will fight so as long as your hamsters r separate there is no need to spay/neuter your hamster.

  3. Keep a single hamster or a same s*x pair (dwarfs only - syrians can NOT be housed together) and you won't have to worry about an unintended pregnancy.

I doubt you could find a vet that would perform this surgery unless it was an emergency situation (emergency c-section to save mom) and would instead tell you to invest in separate cages.

  4. There's no point really, just get two females or two males if your wanting two.

but at my vet in Scotland it costs £57 and in USA about $65

  5. Hamsters are so small that attempting to spay or neuter would be too dangerous, so it's not even done.  Just don't put a male and female together.  But before you get one, make sure money will be available for any vet care it does end up needing, because that's not optional.

  6. you don't need to neuter/spay a hamster. they like to be alot so there is no real point in it.

  7. If you're just getting one, don't bother.  But don't get two males, or a female and male.  The males will fight and may kill eachother and the others will, of course have babies.  If you want more than one get two females.  But ask at the pet store what the sexes are.  Most stores will only carry one s*x.  So be careful.

  8. You don't need to neuter hamsters.  You just keep them alone (or in same s*x pairs ot groups for dwarf hamsters).  It would be a risky operation as giving an anesthetic to an animal that small is very risky and it would be too delicate.

  9. hamsters don't get neutered due to their small size.  also syrian hamsters are solitary so 1 per cage should be housed and there will be no problems of any babies.  Feel free to drop me a line anytime on nadia@hamster-club.com if you want.  http://www.hamster-club.com

  10. uhh, i think it costs a lot, at leats 30$. my vet charges i think qaround 60$. No, it isn't worth it.

  11. Absolutely no need to do such a risky surgery on hamsters. If you're talking about Syrian hamsters, they need to be kept alone anyway as they are highly territorial.

  12. There's no real point in getting it done unless you have a male/female pair living together. Because it's a complex surgery on a small animal, it would cost a lot- but overall it is pointless.
