My family just moved to Texas and we still need to get our car, which is still registered in MD, switched over to TX. About how much will that cost us?

Thanks!

  1. First, I'm sure you do not need to pay any fee to MD for the switch, or that any of your current MD fees paid to-date will transfer to your TX tag fee.

Now for your TX annual tag fees, you will need to pay a state fee based on the model year for your car - or weight of your truck - in addition to a local fee that is normally assessed by the county you reside in.  For example, if you have a 2006 or newer model car, you will be assessed:

    1) A state fee of $58.80, due to the state of TX

    2) A local fee, which for example's sake, is $10 in Dallas

    3) an additional $1 handling fee if you process your application through the mail

Thus, for this example, your fee is $69.80

I'll append an url below that will take you to the Texas Department of Transportation to determine your actual tag fee.

But this might not represent your total cost, as you may find you have an additional cost - or savings - due to the insurance cost differential between TX and MD.  For example, let's say you have a State Farm Insurance policy covering your car.  It is very likely that the cost of a TX-resident policy providing similar coverage to what you had in MD will be different, either higher or lower; this is something you will need to determine when you make the move.

One final reminder: don't forget to get a TX driver's License!

    Now welcome to Texas, Y'all!
