Even thought experience Amtrak is fast, but it has limited service, so best choise is SEPTA R-7 and New Jersey Transit Northeast Corridor.

If you live in Philadelphia area served by R-7 including Temple University, Market East, 30th St, Suburb, etc, one way is $8 or round trip $14 to Trenton, ticket must be purchase at Machine or Ticket Office because SEPTA Conductor charge you additional $2.

At Trenton Station, purchase one way $12.50 or round off-peak trip $21.50 ticket to New York Penn Station must be purchase from New Jersey Transit Ticket Machine. If you purchase from NJT Conductor, it cost you $5 additional.

Off-peak roundtrip must be use on same day.

Just remember:

There are different ways to get there by train.

The quickest and the easiest is to take Amtrak.  As long as you stay away from the Acela Express extra-cost trains, you can make the trip for about $43.  Figure about an hour and 20 minutes travel time, with only a few stops.

If money is a big object and you're not in a rush, you can also take SEPTA from 30th Street Station to Trenton, and change to a New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station in New York.  The trip makes numerous stops and will take about twice as long, but will cost about half the price.

Another cheap way to go is the "Chinatown" buses, which are dirt cheap, and should be seen as a competitor to the local NJT service.  Amtrak is more pleasant.
