How much does it cost to use Mobile IM on a prepaid Virgin Mobile phone?

I just bought a Keyocera Wildcard(also known as "Lingo" from Cricket mobile). I haven't gotten it yet, but something tells me I won't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Supposedly it has an IM option, but if you're using prepaid minutes, how much does it cost to use the IM program? Is it by the minute, by the message, or is there only one charge for using it on the day you use it regardless of how much you used it that day (wishful thinking, I know). I plan on eventually switching to Cricket mobile, but I couldn't order that without a drivers license. Anyway, please help me. Also, does anyone know if the data cable Keyocera sells for the Lingo works with it if it's running under Virgin Mobile?

I have the wildcard myself, and when I was activating my phone online, you choose a minutes plan, and then you can add on  what the call    " messaging". Messages include email, im, and texts. $5 a month per 1000 messages and $10 a month for unlimited. When you activate your phone phone online  you will be able to choose.
