How much does it cost you a month?

My mother in law has a ford fiesta (year 2002) 1.4 litres. She charges me £80 a month petrol. I have no idea about cars and petrol and tank sizes, but with asking people, they have said that that is too much. I have worked out that I travel 268 miles a month. Is £80 a month too much for the amount of travel I do? Thank you.

  1. Debatable really by how much , if she charges you just for petrol then yes she is charging too much , as she should get 40 miles per gallon and petrol is about £5 a gallon so you are paying for 640 miles of petrol. But you are also contributing to wear and tear in her car and so a little contribution to this should be taken into consideration. I think £50 a month is still generous, but should cover all bases.

  2. be happy...does she pay insurance? oil changes...get ur own car and see what it really costs to own one...and are u making the car payments???

  3. Hi I have a Fiesta myself, it is newer than the one you are talking about but not sure hat matters too much. it is a 1.6, and it costs me £43 to fill it up, (used to cost me £35 but ith the cost of fuel going up its gone up too) when i fill my car up it says I have 344 miles in my tank (for example) and i do more than that as i have checked my milage and what the gauge says, and it is different. I do mostly town driving, but I will be doing more motor way miles.

so yes in simple terms she is charging you too much for the travel you do, you are probably paying for her fuel too. It may be a suggestion to say that you will fill the car up once a month and you are quits as you will know what you are putting in and what you are using.

check the mileage and petrol gauge when you last use the car and check them again when you get back in the car(if she has been using it between this time) to see the diffrence.

    hope this helps

  4. I would of though at most a full tank of petrol in a fiesta should more than cover your 268 miles a month and that this car should do at least 35 miles per gallon if not driven hard.

And being a small car i would think £45 at most would fill it up.

As a comparison i`m currently using a 2001 1.0 Micra as a temporary car, it takes £36 to fill it up and its returning over 270 miles.
