How much does a teacher for special needs children earn in a year? I am just saying on average.

  1. not enough, especially for how much you paid for the education.


  2. It would depend on the state . . and then different districts pay differently as well. In CA to be a Special Education teacher one must have a degree then a teaching credential then a special education credential. Colleges varies on how they arrange a program to accomplish it. This gives one a lot of units(college credits) and the pay schedules are according to years of experience AND number of units one comes in with. In Redding CA one starts at about $34,000 with a brand new credential and a degree + 60 college units more.

  3. If you started in New Jersey where I'm from, you would get about 43,000 at first with a bachelors degree. The pay scale after 18 years would be about 84,000. The more degrees you get the higher the salary at all levels. Job openings for special education teachers are wide open...but be advised, it's not an easy job and attrition is high.
