i called my vet and asked how much it would be to clip my two parakeets wings. And they said $20 a bird. And usually, they only clip one of their wings! it sounds outrageous! I can't pay $40 to clip 1 wing on each of my birds. I only 13! Anyway, they were the cheapest price i could find.

Also, if i do clip my birds wings, how often do they need clipped? Every 6 months, a couple years? This is my first time owning birds so i'm a little clueless..any help would be great!

  1. Never Clip one wing only. They crash, you want them to gracefully fly down to the ground not fall like a rock....

See an Avian Vet Http://aav.org. A regular Vet has almost no training with birds.

The price should be $10-$20 per bird and should only be needed when they start flying again.

Make sure it is necessary to clip the birds wings, a bird is designed to fly, with training a bird will be a fine flighted companion.

  2. just do it yourself.....then your birdy will know its ok because its you thats doing it and your the boss....anyway i had a bird when i was 9 and i clipped its wings.....dont be afraid just make sure not to clip them too short...they need to be clipped every once in a while....if they start looking long clip em!

  3. Your birds don't need there wings clipped.  I have owned a few birds, some that have been clipped and some that haven't.  You could always try letting them go unclipped for awhile and see how they do.  $40 is very high for getting wings clipped.  It only takes about 5 min. to do it.  You could try a pet store, one that is knowledgeable about bird care.  When I clipped a birds wings it was around $15 for both.  If you do clip you need to have both wings clipped-it is strange that they give a price for just clipping one.  I wouldn't go to that vet, they don't seem to know birds as well as they should.  Go to an avian vet (one that specializes in birds).

  4. well im 14. and i have 2 cockatiels. my mom usually clips their wings herself. so idk how much it would be. but if u clip them urself make sure you dont clip them too short because they can bleed to death[not trying 2 scare u lol]. but that would be the cheapest and easiest.
