  1. at my company we use 6.767lbs per gal for all calculations

  2. density of aviation fuel varies as per type and additives. different aircraft and country have own norms on usage of av gas. ususally a liter of fuel would weigh .8 to .9 kg/lt. lighter than water.

  3. at 15 °C (59 °F), it would weigh 0.8075 kg/L...

  4. A lot of people would know.  What about the people who pump it?  The mechanics who work on those aircraft?  The supply people who store it?

I think it's 6 lbs and some change for military JP8 which is used in everything from helicopters to humvees.

  5. Jet fuel weighs 6.7 pounds and, he probably said pilots would know because they have to do the weight and balance calculations

  6. temp variation is pretty significant.

I'm an analyst not a pilot, all I can tell you is, we use 6.6 lbs per gallon as a representative figure in all our calculations.

That's Jet-A fuel for commercial airliners.

  7. we use the standard 6.7lbs for Jp8 but it does change with temperature but not that significantly.

  8. I would bet the vast majority of pilots have never flown an aircraft that uses jet fuel. Would you expect a free balloon pilot to know? What about a glider pilot? What about all the pilots who fly small single-engine piston-power craft?

There are much better "real pilots would know" questions. One good one is the government's 800 number that routes you to a flight service station. (Though people who only flight through private dispatchers might have forgotten.) Another good one is the transponder code for a hijack. (Though people who fly only aircraft with no electronics might not know.)

Airspace questions might be better. For example, "the airspace around the majority of airports with an operational control tower is what class?" (Answer: D or Delta.)

  9. Average JetA density is 6.41. This will change with the delivery of new fuel, Air temp, humidity in the air, and the altitude that the fuel is being delivered. Most pilots could really care less what the fuel density is. What they are more concerned about is a: do we have enough to make it from point A to point B. b: are we above our take off weight. c: how much would we need if we have to divert. and d: is it close to equal in both wings? I delivered fuel to Aircraft for 6 years. Not once did I ever have a pilot care or even ask what the fuel density is. So no if you where a real pilot you may or may not know. Besides it’s all on the fuel slip so they can read it if they really need to.

  10. Well, it's been a while but IIRC, JP8 weighs 6.8 lbs/gallon.

  11. 6.84 pounds and I am not a pilot.
