  1. Huh? I don't understand.

If you are talking about VA disability benefits, that is something he is going to have to deal with the VA about. He should file a claim with the VA as soon as he gets out and should get registered  at the nearest VA hospital to where you will be located at. The rest is up to the VA

oh, and the disablilty is paid by percentage of disabilty, it has nothing to do with rank.

  2. he will have to file a claim with the VA to get benefits.   If he was wounded the medical facility might have helped him.   If he hasn't filed with the VA have him do so at once.   Please don't try to do the claim by yourself  go to your county veterans service officer for help or go to the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.  The DAV has the best track record when it comes to getting the claim properly addressed.    I wish you the best and don't give up   mr  doodles

  3. he must get a disability rating from the VA.  that determines what he gets.

Once he is out he must go through the VA, the Navy no longer has any jurisdiction.

  4. That all depends on what he is being discharged with honestly. He will need to speak to his command and doctors about that. They will have better information. I can give you a case example however. When I was going through Recruiter School, one of my classmates another E5 had started having problems while we were PT'ing. He went to the Base Hospital, it was admitted to the Hospital. It turns out that he had developed Type 1 Diabetes. He was from North Carolina originally. He was discharged on a Full Medical Discharge and will receive full Base pay for E-5 for the rest of his life. On top of that he gets free medical care coverage, and full College Benefits. I felt sorry for him, but to be honest, I wouldn't have minded that myself.

  5. Good luck.  Nobody cares about disabled vets - least of all sailors.  Army and USMC get the glory - sailors can rot.  It will take years of fighting to get what's coming.  Save ALL your paperwork, do NOT hire an attorney, hang in there!  Contact the VA and apply for disability - it should only take a few years to come through.  Contact the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and join.  Join the VFW if able and the American Legion.  Fight, fight, fight!!!  Good luck.
