How much does owning a pool add to your utilities?

My boyfriend and I are looking at houses. I want a pool. He seems to think that owning a pool adds too much to your monthly utility bill in addition to what it costs to maintain with chemicals etc... We live in Vegas, can anyone out there that has a pool, in ground, give me an idea of what they cost? Does it add $100 to your electric bill? or $500??

  3. As a rough guide the average pool will use about 8kW hours of electricity a day, to run the pump and saltchlorinator.

A kW hour is the unit they use to bill you for electricity. Here in Sydney I pay about 13 cents per kW hour. Which means it would cost me

    8 times $0.13 = $1.04 per day to run.

    So about $30 a month

I hope this helps, I unfortunately have no idea how much you pay for electricity in Vegas. (I've seen the ad on tv for Vegas, it looks like they are giving electricity away for free. ha ha)

  4. $50 or less but depends on how long your pump is running and if it has any ancillary energy hogs, like a salt/chlorine generator or the like.

If you have an attached spa you will want to heat it and that should only cost 3-5 per use.  Heating the entire pool in winter can cost an additional $400 for one weekend!

Chemicals would cost another 20-50 per month depending on condition of pool.  They go south very fast if not maintained through escrow.  Cheap insurance, pay a pool guy to maintain and leave the power and water on.

    You're welcome!!
