  1. You should get and Explanation of Benefits mailed to you when they pay your claim, if not you can call and request one.  This will tell you exactly how much the insurance company paid to the hospital.  It's hard to estimate what they paid as it is a negotiated rate the insurance company has with the hospital and most often not disclosed.

  2. It depends on your insurance!  Honestly, there are hundreds of different answers, because each company will have multiple plans, and will pay what you plan covers.

So there's no answer, except call the number on the back of your card, and ask.

  3. Well I would be willing to bet that insurance does not pay a dime over $35k if you were quoted 100k with out insurance.  So my question is why can't the doctors give us the price insurance pays them? I am having gastric bypass surgery for weight loss. My insurance of course did not cover it. So the price is about $35k for me to pay directly. However a friend who had this surgery and her insurance paid for it the insurance only had to pay $15-16k.  Sad huh? Oh by the way I am having my surgery in India the people that set it up for me are very good at what they do and have a wealth of information. I am paying less than the cost insurance would pay in the US. So think about that if you are having any kind of surgery.

  4. That depends on your health insurance plan. Different insurance companies have different policies. Negotiate with your insurance company and try to get the benefits of your plan.

  5. At Shriners Hospitals for Children, children up to the age of 18 with orthopaedic conditions (including scoliosis) are eligible for admission and receive all care in a family-centered environment at no charge regardless of financial need.

If you know of a child Shriners Hospitals might be able to help, you can call the toll-free patient referral line:

    U.S.: 1-800-237-5055.

    Canada: 1-800-361-7256

I was a Shriner's patient and now I'm a nurse, so speaking as a patient and as a professional, I think Shriner's is the best place for scoliosis patients! Shriner's goes above and beyond for their kids.
