  1. These are rough prices (based on what I see in Chicago):

Basic gear required for class (mask, fins, snorkel): $300 to $500, could be slightly more or less based on what exactly you buy or if you need something special like prescription lenses.

Pool and Class: $200 to $400

Check-out Dives for Certification: $200 to $400 (more if on a boat and they charge you a fuel surcharge)

Tips, snacks, etc.:  $100 to $200

  2. You can go to a school that supplies  every thing you need for your training.ether here or in hawaii. This is best to do . Because you will learn about the equipment befor you buy if you buy. Realy the only personal things  you really need is your own mask and fins because its nice to have them fit your face and feet. but then again you will know better what fit means after /during your training.Ive done lots of diving. Some around maui,  Really just go a training site that provides everything. but, you could go your local dive shop and buy you each a good fitting mask with snorkel and  some fins too.(the dive shop help you with selection) and take those with you to hawaii..This way you can go snorkeling in the clear shallows and see all the beauty thats there. (you dont need any thing else to snokel) so, to answer your cost question mask ,snorkel& fin around 150 to $200 total  for both of you. you wont need a wet suit in hawaii ,warm water .and the school always supplies the tanks, weight belt ,regulator,&BC ..they will have mask and fins too but the fit may not be the best. also no license needed  to take course .after course complete you get a certificate . that is your permit to rent equipment in the future.  the area that you are going to in hawawii will have local out fits  that provide all this for tourist, thats how they make their living . they will train you with a group, enough so you can go with them for a dive in the ocean.under their supervision....(goggle) the

dive shops in town that you are going to and  makeyour plans before you go. and get their prices..   they will vary ...   P.S. getting your training here will not teach you enough to go diving  alone in the ocean..so you might as well make the training with others part of your hawaii experience..  dgriggs6@cfl.rr.com,,cocoa beach ,fla..  Have a lot of fun,Mahalo

  3. If your not sure that you want to continue diving after your Hawaii trip, wait till you go.

Locate a dive shop near where you plan on staying.

    Arrange a "Discover Scuba" class.

What this does is take you and the 12 year old, gives you basic instruction, and you dive with that instructor.

You'll be limited in your depth, but, it will let you decide if you want to continue your diving education.

If you do want to continue, you can count your discover class towards that education, right in the same shop you did your discover dive class in.

A discover dive class is half (or less) of the cost of a full certification class.

Get the address you'll be staying in in HI.  Plug that address into this:

    http://www.padi.com/padi/common/dcnr_dis...

That will give you a close instruction center.  Call them, and they will arrange everything, and give you the exact costs involved.
