My girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Zihuatanejo this July and we are both poor students. I know it's Mexico, but it's also touristy (especially in Ixtapa). But how about in Zihuatanejo?

Are much are meals at the restaurants?

Car rentals?

Scooter rentals?

A Corona at the bar?

Any information regarding prices in Zihuatanejo (or Ixtapa if that's all you know) would really be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Try this web site (www.zihuatanejo.net)  it has lots of info on both Zihua and Ixtapa.  Meals in Zihua are very reasonable, car rentals can get expensive, we always shop the internet and reserve before we go. What gets expensive is their car insurance (which costs more than renting a car). Even the beers are reasonable. There are great shrimp tacos along the pier. Try La Sirena Gorda(the fat mermaid). I can't complain about our meals they were all great and very inexpensive. Ixtapa is very touristy, we hardly go that way and enjoy Zihua much more.

  2. Ixtapa is incredible and a little pricey. Its bueautiful though.

As long as you get away from the beach when getting your hotel and meals your fine. I got a hotel in Zihuatanejo 2 months ago for about $35 usd. Coronas are a dollar ( 10 pesos ).

I'd look at using a taxi for transportation. Its cheaper just plan accordingly. The buses run on the main drag and go out to Ixtapa.

If I rented a car Id rent it for a day and drive south and stop off at the killer little bars that sit right on the highway overlooking the ocean.Killer views !!!  I stop there EVERYTIME I travel to Ixtapa. Just have a beer meander down to  the beach and then drive the rest of the way.

Another must see on that drive is Costa Azul. Another magical spot. Its got a river and lake and not to mention a deserted beach thats unbelievable !  Ive seen some 30 ft waves out there - just incredible. Finish the trip here in Acapulco and return the car and stay a few days here.

Kinda will give you a well rounded Mexican beach tour. Its also the real mexico on that journey. You'll go thru some coconut groves , see what Mexico is REALLY like not the touristy thing that Ixtapa and zuih show you. The drive straight thru is only 3 hours so its not that long a drive.
