I live in New York City so you must know I always take the subway to get from place to place. In school I'm doing a subway project. I have a problem on researching the cost of the MTA buying a train or train(s). Can anyone help me? I need the "website" you found the infomation on too.

  1. First be aware that the MTA is insulated from the laws of the States of N.Y. and N.J.  It has actually come out in newspaper articles that they keep two sets of books.  There is an ocean of graft (taking money off the top) going on in the MTA.  So, mention this in your report.  You May find out what they pay, or what they Say they pay. (after kick-backs and pay -offs).

But how good is that?  It may be easier to call some-one at one of the companies that makes the trains.  Ask them how to get the information.  I mean, in life, if ur only going to use the "easy way"  Every Time, I mean, how far will you get?

Point out in your report that the eventual disolving of the MTA' s protections from the law is most imperative.  And therefore the study of the legal angles of this a much more pertanent study.  You may get an "A" for saying this and being so "estute."

Now for your own knowledge in these things, from time to time an order is put out for a certain number of trains, to be delivered over a period of a year or two. (obviously they all can't be delivered and all the old ones moved out at once.)

So the cost is averged over the time of the contract

It is done by convieniently replacing the trains in one train-yard at a time.  Never are "all the trains" replaced at once.   Because there may be some flaw with the new model; some flaw which may only show itself after a bit of service on the tracks.

The trains in the various MTA yards, since there are so many yards, come from different "purchace lots" from different periods in time.  It may help you to focus on the Newest train to come on line, the one on the East side IRT ( 4,5,6).  If I were you I would note the name of the manufacturer (visible on a plate in or outside the car.  Contact them some-how.  It may be easier to get info this way.

  2. The contract with Kawasaki Heavy Industries is in the millions. All you have to do is contact the TA 718 243 3100 and ask for Public Relations.

    Good Luck
